Description

The North American nebula, or NGC7000 to its friends, is an iconic Northern Hemisphere region in northern Cygnus. It is located near the very bright star Deneb. It is classified as an HII (H2) region. In this nomenclature, the number 2 refers to its ionisation state, not that it is a diatomic molecule. HII means that the Hydrogen atoms have been stripped of an electron (infact making H+ simply a proton). The light from these regions is emitted as free electrons recombine with nuclei. However, these now captured electrons are liberated once more by high energy photons.

Areas that apear blue are relatively rich in OxygenIII, written as [OIII]. This signifies doubly ionised Oxygen atoms, the square brackets indicating that the transition that gives rise to the emission line is 'forbidden'. Forbidden in the sense that we can recreate this in the lab. Some transitions require these excited states to live for a length of time which can only exist in the vacuum of space. On earth, even in our 'vacuums' these atoms get jostled far to frequently and de-excite via other transitions.

Due to the brightness of the North American this is usually a target imaged by beginners early on in their learning.

The Pelican nebula is off to the right and on the right hand edge, we see a red area indicating a relative abundance of [SII]. Also present are some spires that seem to project outwards. These are called Herbig Haro objects and form during the formation of new stars.
